White Brick Extension, Bristol

The interior of the rear outrigger of this Victorian terrace has been reconfigured and extended to create a new galley kitchen, informal seating area and cosy dining alcove. An internal courtyard is formed to allow light into the rear of the main house, whilst also providing a safe space for the Client’s cat to inhabit. The form of the extension references the existing roofline of the outrigger, replicating the same form in miniature. White painted brick provides visual interest to the exterior of the new extension, with new aluminium glazing installed across the whole of the rear façade.

Two large picture windows provide views of both the leafy courtyard and the long, mature garden when sitting at the inbuilt bench seat that is formed around the edge of the dining alcove. Colours for the green exposed steel beams and dark blue feature wall were taken from the Client’s favourite piece of artwork, which hangs in the dining area.

EJ Studio provided concept stage design advice regarding the overall form and layout of the extension, due to the Client having already secured a competent builder for the project. Throughout the build EJ Studio continued to provide design advice to the Client with regards to interior finishes and choices.
