E J Studio is a Bristol based Architecture & Design practice, specialising in residential architecture and interiors for private clients. The practice also undertakes work further afield in London and across the south-west.

The practice was established in 2017 by Lizzie O'Neill who oversees each project and works closely with a small team of trusted freelancers, allowing for an approach that remains personal and flexible.

Our aim is to provide a personalised design service that focuses on our Client's individual requirements, approaching each project with an open mind that allows for a collaborative process informed by brief, budget and timeframe.

We are passionate about good quality, functional design that delivers above the every day norm and results in a transformation of space - whether that be a new-build house, building an extension or just the thoughtful reconfiguration of a home - to bring enjoyment and delight to our Clients.

Elizabeth Jayne O'Neill

Architect  ARB RIBA

Lizzie qualified as an Architect in April 2016 and has close to ten years experience working in the profession. She obtained First Class Honours for both her RIBA Part I and II which she undertook at the Universities of Nottingham and Bath respectively. Throughout her training she worked for a number of practices in London and Sydney including Arup Associates, Squillace Architects and Flower Michelin

Prior to relocating to Bristol and establishing E J Studio Lizzie worked for Levitate Architecture & Design Studio in London, where her focus was on residential architecture and projects primarily located in rural and conservation settings. Alongside new-build homes, she enjoys working with listed and existing buildings, with a focused interest in renovation, re-use and the insertion of contemporary designs into the context of existing structures and places. This interest has led her to become an architectural design consultant for Warehouse Home, working collaboratively on interior design projects within listed warehouse and historical conversions.

Lizzie has also worked for the Chelsea award-winning garden designer Charlotte Rowe. She retains a keen interest and passion for landscape and garden design, which she seeks to engage with as an integrated part of the architectural design process.

Lizzie is currently a Design Studio Tutor for 2nd year students at Cardiff University's Welsh School of Architecture and 3rd year students at the University of Bath.  She has also been a guest critic at The University of the West of England (UWE) and the University of Bristol.

Away from the drawing board Lizzie can be found moseying around antique markets, sketching alfresco or exploring the rugged expanses of Dartmoor equipped with trail running shoes & wild camping gear.

Edward O'Neill

Architectural Assistant

Ed joined E J Studio in November 2020 having previously worked for Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Loyn + Co Architects. He studied for his RIBA Part I and II at the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff.

Prior to embarking on a career in Architecture, Ed obtained a degree in Architectural Engineering. He spent a year working for the concrete sub-contractor Byrne Bros where he gained valuable site experience working on the Stirling Prize winning Bloomberg Headquarters in London.

Ed is currently studying for his Part 3 in order to become a fully qualified Architect but when he can will squeeze in a kicking session at the rugby club or find time to hone his carpentry and tea drinking skills.

Client Testimonials

1960's Terrace House Renovation Clients:

"We really enjoyed working with Lizzie; from start to finish the experience was excellent.  She took the time to really understand what we wanted out of the space. Armed with not the easiest brief – we really need the space to work hard to achieve everything we wanted – Lizzie gave us a range of fantastic options on beautiful drawings. She managed to incorporate everything we wanted, whilst suggesting some great ideas that have become real features in our home. The whole process was really collaborative, from the architectural design, to how much involvement we wanted on interiors and finishes. Lizzie was always happy to help, and everything was very honest with regards to fees and the likely cost of various build options. We were repeatedly told by our suppliers that we had the best set of architect drawings and plans that they had worked from. We have already recommended Lizzie to several friends as we were so impressed with the work!"

Parkfields Clients:

"It was an absolute pleasure to work with Lizzie on our house extension and refurbishment. She not only transformed the space, but also included so many intricate design details to create our dream home. The perfect combination of creativity and practicality!"

Asymmetric Extension Clients:

"Our requirement was a bit unusual as we needed to fit a new structure onto the rear of the house without compromising existing windows, and to create a novel and dramatic structure with ‘wow’ factor whilst transforming the overall look of the rear elevation.  Where two previous architects had failed to find a solution that we liked, Lizzie took us through a layered process that ultimately delivered an exciting and unique solution. Through this, she developed a good understanding of what we were trying to achieve and we are delighted with the resulting scheme.

Lizzie provided an excellent drawings pack that our builders rate as the best they have seen, and was highly effective at working through detail with us and the builders and key suppliers to ensure no issues or surprises as the build progressed. Although the project is still work in progress, we are very confident that the final result will meet and exceed expectations."

Warehouse Home:

"I was immediately struck by Lizzie's professionalism and her passion for architecture and design. She has fast become a valuable member of the Warehouse Home interior design studio. Lizzie is receptive to the client's vision and requirements, as well as input and feedback from the wider Warehouse Home team. She always strives to improve upon the initial idea to exceed the original ambition for the project while adhering to timelines and budgets."

Horley Road Clients:

"Our loft conversion was the first major change we made to our house. We needed an architect who could understand exactly what we wanted, work with us and our desire to use sustainable materials, guide us through the complexities of building regulations and produce a design that we were happy with and excited by. Lizzie rose to this challenge wonderfully.

She was attentive and understanding of our needs throughout, while remaining professional and producing a design of real quality and detail. Her fees represent great value for money, given the high level of personal service. We cannot reccomend her highly enough and look forward to working with her again in the future."
