Elizabeth (Lizzie) Jayne O'Neill
Architect ARB RIBA
Lizzie has been a qualified Architect since April 2016 and has over six years experience working in the profession. She completed her RIBA Part 1 and 2 at the Universities of Nottingham and Bath respectively, and has worked for a number of practices in London and Sydney. Prior to relocating to Bristol and setting up E J Studio she worked for Levitate Architecture & Design Studio in London, specialising in residential schemes of all scales. Alongside new build projects, she enjoys working with listed and existing buildings, with a focused interest in renovation, re-use and the insertion of contemporary designs into the context of existing structures and places. She has also worked for the Chelsea award-winning garden designer Charlotte Rowe, from which she has retained a keen interest & passion for landscape and garden design, which she seeks to engage with as an integrated part of the architectural design process.
Lister Road, London
Planning permission was obtained for this full width extension, which features hardwood timber glazing, London stock brick and a flat sedum roof with deep overhanging eaves. The existing house has a noticeable presence along Lister Road, occupying a double fronted plot and as such, the extension needed to celebrate the special character and scale of the house. The Clients were inspired by Californian mid-century design leading to the form, materiality and architectural quality of the scheme being developed with this in mind. The proposed extension utilises a clean, simple material palette and opens up the house to the extensive garden beyond.
The design was amended at planning stage in order to reduce the overall height and was re-designed in such a way to avoid cutting out light to the neighbours, creating an interesting dining alcove feature where the edge of the roof is stepped. The tall ceiling height of the main area of the extension was retained, which was a key part of the Client’s brief.
The internal step between the existing house and the extension is absorbed within a spine wall containing zones of storage, seating and wide steps that create a playful transition between the old and new, and forms a datum line that is expressed with a material change that wraps around the perimeter of the extension, incorporating the dining alcove seat and the L-shaped window seat.
E J Studio is currently appointed to carry out the technical design of the project and is working closely with the appointed structural engineer Simple Works to develop the scheme.
